A Certified Nursing Assistant certificate is obtained by an individual after finishing a Nursing Assistant training program and passing a state certification examination afterwards. The training program can be completed in as quick as two to three weeks or can run as long as three to six months. The duration of the program will depend on the state where the training is done, the frequency of the classes and the institution offering the course. After the course, you will then be able to take the state examination in order for you to get your certified nursing assistant certificate.

The certified nursing assistant certificate allows you to do practice certain tasks as a nursing assistant, and this includes keeping patients’ room hygienic, observing the patient, documenting patient condition, infection control, oral hygiene, taking of vital signs, helping patients to eat, get dressed and the like. Aside from these things, being a certified nursing assistant also allows one to assist in medical procedures such as CPR and emergency procedures. Certified nursing assistants can also handle legal issues related to nursing, assist in several medical procedures and do tasks that provide environmental safety for the department or the medical unit. A certified nursing assistant certificate however has limitations. There are things that a CNA cannot do, and this includes dispensing of medication.

In order to obtain the certificate, students should undergo CNA training program as well as additional hours of clinical training. The clinical training allows them to get hands on experience inside hospitals, health care agencies, hospices, nursing homes, medical clinics and the like.
