Certified Nursing Assistant Education

Enjoying working with and helping people is probably one of the most important qualities you can have if want to become a certified nursing assistant thru education.  You are the one who will be working most closely with patients, tending to their needs and encouraging them.  Nursing homes make quite a bit of use of nursing assistants to help take care of elderly patients, and hospitals will appreciate the efforts you make to help return the sick and injured to health.  There are a number of options for training available, and you will be able to decide which fits your budget and lifestyle best.

Where You Can Study

As you will be responsible for patient care, you will require training, and all the states will require that you become certified.  You will be able to choose from a number of training opportunities, depending on where you live.  Many community or technical colleges offer certified nursing assistant programs, as do many regular colleges.  Evening as well as day courses are offered at many institutions, too. You will probably be given courses that deal with basic laboratory procedures during your instruction.  Online courses are available to make your training even more convenient, especially if you are juggling family and work responsibilities.  Most states will require a specific number of classroom hours for certification, generally 120 hours.  The price for most certified nursing assistant training is quite reasonable, usually in the range of several hundred dollars, and you may also qualify for financial help or free training in some districts.

Hands On

After you have successfully completed your classroom instruction, it will be time for the mandated hands on training.  While using text books and verbal instruction is important, there comes a time when you must learn how to actually apply what you have learned with patients.  This training can be had in a variety of ways, but most nursing assistants will train at a hospital or nursing home.  You will learn not only how to deal with the people under your care, but also hospital and nursing home procedures.  As these will vary from institution to institution, the only way that you will be able to acquire this knowledge is by actually being there, only the most general instruction will be able to be given in the classroom.

Certification

It will be a proud day when you have completed your classroom and hands on training and can take the state test that will provide you with your certification.  Once you have successfully passed the test and received your degree and state certificate, you will be able to begin your new career.  Finding work should be no problem, as there is a shortage of nursing assistants in almost every area of the country.  Besides receiving a salary, most nursing assistants find a great deal of satisfaction in their work knowing that they are helping others.
