Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in Florida

A Certified Nursing Assistant, or nursing aide as they are sometimes known, holds an understated yet crucially important role in the day-to-day operative functioning of the entire health care field. Certified Nursing Assistants, or CNAs, work on the front line of patient care under the supervision of nurses, providing for the basic needs of those who are unable to care for themselves. CNAs work with sick or disabled people, helping them with simple but important tasks like feeding, washing and clothing. A CNA aims to provide both physical and moral support to a patient, helping them to eventually regain control of their own functioning. It is a job which can be challenging, sometimes demanding, but always rewarding.

There are plenty of Certified Nursing Assistant classes in Florida. It is a great place to begin pursuing the path of a CNA, because nursing aides are so in demand throughout the state. There are so many healthcare agencies, hospitals, assisted living facilities, long-term care homes, clinics and home health companies throughout the state, that a Certified Nursing Assistant in Florida is never going to be short of work. In order to take the qualification exam to become a CNA, it is crucial to have first completed a proper CNA training program.

Community colleges, high schools, nursing institutes, healthcare agencies and other educational establishments offer Certified Nursing Assistant classes in Florida. Among the larger schools offering Certified Nursing Assistant classes are Pasco-Hernando Community College and Saint Johns River Community College, though there are many to choose from. The former of these, Pasco-Hernando Community College, provides high-tech, modern health labs to provide nursing students with an advanced medical setting similar to real hospitals and clinics. The college lies in New Port Richey, and offers a range of other state-of-the-art facilities including ‘human patient simulators’. These mimic human physiology and are responsive to human communication and intervention. The Pasco-Hernando course can be taken either full-time or part-time; they offer a variety of CNA training program modules. The college also offers a number of technical and vocational awards in addition to the core CNA certification.

Saint Johns River Community College, our second example, is an equally advanced institute. The recently opened Health-Sciences Building offers state-of-the-art facilities, and the typical nursing assistant program consists of a highly comprehensive list of classes in a variety of subjects. Medical terminology, nutrition, legal and ethical responsibilities, gerontology, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation are just some of the many areas covered in detail.

There are too many approved Certified Nursing Assistant classes in Florida to list them all here, but each and every one of them will offer students the required knowledge and skills to take the certification exam and become a fully qualified CNA. Any course will combine classroom lecture-style learning with clinical hands-on experience, in equal measure. A significant amount of time is also always devoted to laboratory work. Finding the right CNA training program for you is likely to depend on a number of factors. If you’re working during the day, then look for a course which offers evening classes. If you’re available throughout the day and just want to get the skills quickly, perhaps an intense 1 month ‘flash’ course would be best, whereas the long, progressive and drawn-out 4-6 month courses would suit others better. Any approved CNA course in Florida will teach you the fundamentals in patient care, interpersonal skills, safety techniques, infection control, medical terminology, nutrition, vital signs and CPR, usually in addition to a range of subsidiary subjects which are also important. Any program will require at least 120 hours of training in total.
